The most common reason a technique feels difficult is that the shear cannot do what is being asked of it. A beveled edge will never slide cut cleanly. A 5.0" shear will never produce a smooth scissor-over-comb blend. Before assuming a technique problem, check the specification.

The order to learn them in
These techniques build on one another, and taking them out of order is why some stylists spend years texturising their way out of problems that better foundations would have prevented.
- Blunt cutting comes first, and it is not a beginner technique you graduate from — it is the discipline every other technique is judged against. Even tension, a visible guideline, one moving blade, one clean closure.
- Layering and graduation next, because elevation is the mechanism behind every shape that is not one length. Understand it properly and you stop copying diagrams.
- Point cutting third. It is the safest texturising technique, the effect is small and controllable, and it teaches you to assess between passes.
- Scissor over comb when you need it. It is a rhythm skill that responds to deliberate practice more than to explanation, and it is best learned on a mannequin.
- Slide cutting last of the core five. It is the least reversible technique in the kit, and the one where a wrong tool causes damage rather than just a poor result.
Wet vs. dry sits alongside all of them — it is a decision about method rather than a technique in its own right.
Diagnosing a technique problem
Most persistent faults trace back to something specific and fixable. Before assuming you need more practice, check whether the fault has a known cause.

Two of those rows are tool problems rather than technique problems, which is exactly the point: you cannot practise your way past a shear that cannot do what you are asking. If a fault survives deliberate practice, check the specification.
Technique and your hands
Technique is also an ergonomic decision. Palm-to-palm cutting keeps the elbow low and the wrist neutral; reaching for a cutting angle instead of moving your feet raises the shoulder for hours a day. Over-comb work done with a shear that is too short means more passes and more closures for the same result.
