Convex vs. beveled edge shears
How convex, semi-convex and beveled blade geometry change the way a shear cuts — technique by technique — plus how to identify the edge on a shear you already own.
Edge type is where a shear stops being a specification sheet and starts being a feel. Two shears with identical steel, length and handles can behave like completely different tools because of how the last half-millimetre of blade is ground.
The two geometries
Convex — the Japanese style
A convex blade has a smooth, continuous curve on the inner face running from the ride line all the way to the cutting edge. There is no shoulder and no abrupt change of angle. The two blades meet along a very fine line, held in contact by tension rather than by mechanical interference.
What this produces is glide. A hair strand approaching the blade face meets a continuously curving surface, gets deflected progressively rather than stopped, and is severed as it reaches the edge. There is almost no friction, almost no push-ahead, and consequently almost no sound. That is the well-known "quiet" quality of a good Japanese shear, and it is what makes slide cutting, deep point cutting and dry texturising possible.
Beveled — the German style
A beveled blade runs comparatively flat and then transitions into a distinct, steeper angle in roughly the last millimetre before the edge. Frequently one blade carries micro-serration: a row of very fine teeth that grip the hair so it cannot escape as the blades close.
The result is control rather than glide. Hair is held and severed rather than sliced. For blunt cutting on wet hair, for scissor-over-comb where the section is being held by the comb anyway, and for cutting through dense or coarse hair, this is genuinely an advantage. There is more steel behind the edge, so the blade tolerates being dropped, closed on a clip or run through a coat full of grit.
Semi-convex — the hybrid
Partial curvature with a modest final bevel. It slides well enough for light point cutting, survives more abuse than a full convex, and costs less to maintain. Many barber and grooming shears ship this way and it is an under-rated choice.

Read the table for the techniques you actually perform, not the ones you admire. A stylist doing precision bobs on wet hair five days a week is genuinely better served by a beveled or semi-convex shear than by a premium convex one, and will spend less maintaining it.
How to identify the edge on a shear you own
Look along the blade face under a light
Hold the open shear so light rakes across the inner face. A convex blade reflects as a smooth continuous gradient. A beveled blade shows a distinct bright band in the last millimetre where the angle changes.
Run a fingernail across the edge — gently, blade closed direction
A bevel gives you a detectable step. A convex face runs into the edge without one. Do this against the flat, never along the cutting edge.
Check for micro-serration
Tilt one blade to the light and look for a regular fine grating pattern. Serration means beveled, always.
Try a slow slide on a test section
Open the blades a few degrees and draw them down a strand under light tension. A convex edge takes hair off cleanly and quietly. A bevel pushes hair ahead of it and you will feel the drag immediately.
Verify, don't trust the listing
Marketing language is not reliable here. "Convex" appears on listings for shears that clearly carry a ground bevel, and some genuinely good semi-convex shears are sold as convex. The light test above takes ten seconds and settles it.
Living with a convex edge
A convex edge is not fragile, but it is unforgiving of three specific things:
- Impact. A drop onto a tiled floor can roll or chip the edge in a way that requires a full re-grind. Keep the shear in a case, not loose in a drawer.
- Foreign objects. Closing a convex shear on a hair clip, a grip or a section pin will nick the edge instantly. Beveled blades often survive the same mistake.
- Bad sharpening. The most common way a convex shear is ruined is by a sharpener who treats it like a bevel. Ask specifically whether they sharpen convex on a flat rotating wheel with the blade angle worked through the curve. If the answer is vague, do not leave the shear.
Tension matters more on convex blades too, because the cut depends on the two edges maintaining contact rather than on mechanical grip. A convex shear set too loose will fold hair almost immediately, where a serrated bevel will keep cutting badly for weeks. See tension and maintenance.

If you can only own one shear and you do a mixed column, buy convex. It covers more techniques, and the only real cost is that you have to look after it properly. If you have specific, repetitive, wet, blunt work — or you groom dogs — beveled or semi-convex will serve you longer for less money.
Frequently asked questions
Can I slide cut with beveled shears?
Not well. The bevel presents an angled shoulder to the hair rather than a continuous curve, so strands catch and push ahead of the blade instead of sliding into the edge. You get drag, an uneven result and — with micro-serrated blades — visible damage to the hair. If slide cutting is part of your work, you need convex.
What is a semi-convex edge?
A hybrid: a partially curved blade face that stops short of a full convex hollow, usually with a slightly steeper final bevel. It glides better than a true bevel, tolerates abuse better than a full convex, and costs less to sharpen. It is a sensible default for barbers and pet groomers.
Why do some shears have teeth on one blade?
That is micro-serration, and it belongs to the beveled family. The fine teeth grip hair so it cannot slide out of the blade during a cut, which makes wet blunt cutting and over-comb work very controlled. The cost is that you cannot slide cut at all, and the serrations wear away over successive sharpenings.
Does a convex edge stay sharp for less time?
Slightly, all else being equal, because the edge is finer and there is less steel supporting it. In practice premium convex shears are made from harder alloys, which compensates. The bigger real-world difference is that a convex edge is less tolerant of being dropped or closed on a hair clip.
Can a normal sharpener service a convex edge?
Only if they specialise in it. Convex geometry has to be restored on a rotating flat wheel with the blade held at a continuously changing angle — it is a different skill from sharpening a bevel on a jig. A sharpener who grinds a flat bevel onto a convex blade permanently destroys its glide. Always ask before handing anything over.
