Sharpening is the single service that determines whether a good shear lasts a decade or is ruined in one afternoon. It is also the part of shear ownership that most professionals delegate without asking a single question. This page is about asking the right ones.

Work through that table before booking a service. Tension and pivot debris account for a large share of "my shears have gone blunt" complaints, and both are free to fix.

How to tell when an edge is genuinely worn

  • The tip test. Cut a small, held section using only the last third of the blade. Tips are where a worn edge shows first.
  • The single-strand test. Hold one hair loosely and cut it slowly near the middle of the blade. A sharp shear severs it cleanly without the strand sliding forward.
  • The sound test. A convex shear should be near-silent through hair. Grittiness, crunching or a scraping quality means the edges are no longer meeting cleanly.
  • The double-closure habit. If you have started closing twice on sections without deciding to, your hand already knows the shear is dull.

What a good sharpening service involves

  1. Inspection and diagnosis

    Blade alignment, ride line condition, pivot wear and existing edge geometry are assessed before anything touches a wheel. A good sharpener will tell you what they found.

  2. Cleaning and disassembly where appropriate

    The pivot is cleaned. Some sharpeners separate the blades for service and re-mate them at the original orientation — this is normal in skilled hands and should not be attempted at home.

  3. Grinding to restore geometry

    For convex blades, on a flat rotating wheel with the blade worked through the curve. For beveled blades, at the correct fixed angle. This is the step where the wrong technique causes permanent damage.

  4. Honing and finishing

    A progression of finer abrasives brings the edge to its final sharpness. The finish quality here is much of what separates a good service from an adequate one.

  5. Ride line restoration

    The contact band behind the edge is re-established so the blades bear correctly. Skip this and the shear will never hold tension.

  6. Reassembly, tension setting and test cut

    Tension is set and the shear is tested on hair. It should come back cutting cleanly, not merely sharp.

A service that consists only of putting the blades on a wheel is not a service. The inspection, the alignment check and the tension setting are what make the shear work when it comes back.

How to audition a sharpener

Find your sharpener before you need one, and test them on a mid-range shear rather than your flagship. A sharpener who returns a $150 shear cutting beautifully has earned the $600 one.

Convex geometry: why it is different

A beveled edge can be restored by holding the blade at a fixed angle against an abrasive — the same principle as sharpening a knife, and it can be jigged. A convex edge has no fixed angle. The face is a continuous curve, so the sharpener has to move the blade through a changing angle against a flat rotating wheel to reproduce that curve, then hone the resulting edge and re-establish the ride line.

It is a skill, it takes years to develop, and it is why convex sharpening costs more and why fewer shops offer it. A sharpener who treats a convex blade as a bevel does not merely do a poor job — they permanently change the geometry, and no subsequent service will restore the original glide.

Blenders and notched shears

Notched shears are sharpened differently again. The solid blade is edged conventionally; the toothed blade needs each tooth addressed so the tips remain even and the gaps stay clean. Skipping this leaves a blender that grabs and pulls.

Expect to pay more and wait longer for blender service, and expect longer intervals between services — a notched shear does considerably less cutting than a straight one.

How many sharpenings does a shear have in it?

Each service removes a small amount of steel. Over many services the blade narrows, the geometry changes, and eventually the shear cannot be brought back. A well-made shear serviced by a competent sharpener typically has fifteen to twenty-five services in it — a decade or more of professional use.

The signs that a shear is at the end of its serviceable life: the blade is visibly narrower than a new example, the ride line cannot be re-established, or the pivot has developed lateral play that adjustment will not remove.

Sharpen on symptom, not on schedule

Do not sharpen on a fixed calendar out of habit. Every unnecessary service removes steel you will want later. Sharpen when the shear tells you it needs it — but check for the symptoms deliberately every few weeks rather than waiting until it becomes unusable mid-column.

Extending the interval

Everything that extends sharpening intervals is free:

  • Wipe after every client — residue is abrasive.
  • Never cut anything that is not hair. Keep utility scissors at the station for foil and tape.
  • Clear clips and grips from a section before cutting it.
  • Keep tension correct — a loose shear wears unevenly.
  • Case the shear every time you put it down.
  • Use the middle of the blade for bulk work and reserve the tips for detail.

How often should professional shears be sharpened?

For a full-time salon stylist, every six to twelve months. Barbers and pet groomers typically need service every three to eight months because of higher closure counts, drier or dirtier hair, and abrasive debris. The honest answer is to sharpen on symptom rather than on calendar — but check for symptoms deliberately rather than waiting until the shear is unusable.

Can I sharpen shears myself?

Not convex ones, no. Restoring convex geometry requires a flat rotating wheel, the correct abrasive progression and the skill to work the blade angle through the curve — it takes real training. Beveled shears can in principle be touched up on a stone, but the risk of destroying the ride line is high. Sharpening is one of the few genuinely specialist services in this trade.

What does professional shear sharpening cost?

Broadly $25–$50 for a beveled shear, $40–$80 for a convex shear, and more for blenders because each tooth is addressed individually. Factory service from a premium maker costs more and usually includes a full inspection, re-honing and tension service. Prices vary widely by region.

How can I tell my shears need sharpening?

Hair folds or pushes rather than severing, particularly at the tips. You find yourself closing twice on the same section. Ends look frayed under magnification. The cut sounds different — grittier or louder. And crucially: tension is correct and the pivot is clean, and it still does not cut.

Can a bad sharpener ruin a shear?

Permanently, yes. The two classic failures are grinding a flat bevel onto a convex blade — which destroys the glide forever — and grinding the inner face, which removes the ride line so the shear will never hold tension again. Always ask specifically whether they sharpen convex, and how.
