Shear tension and maintenance
How to set shear tension with the drop test, diagnose a shear that will not cut, and the daily and weekly routine that takes a professional shear to ten years.
Most shears sent for sharpening do not need sharpening. They need tension adjusted, a pivot cleaned, and forty seconds of daily care that has not been happening. Learning to tell the difference saves money and downtime.
What tension actually does
Tension sets how firmly the two blades bear against each other along the ride line as they close. That contact is what makes a shear cut: hair is severed at the point where the edges cross, and if they are not in contact, hair slides into the gap and folds instead.
Get it wrong in either direction and you pay:
- Too loose — hair folds, particularly at the tips. The cut feels vague, ends look chewed, and you unconsciously compensate by squeezing, which loads your hand.
- Too tight — the shear fights you all day, your hand tires quickly, and the ride line wears prematurely. Over-tightening is genuinely destructive over months.
The drop test
Hold the shear vertically, tips upward
Hold it by the finger ring so the shear hangs naturally, blades pointing at the ceiling.
Open the top blade to about 90 degrees
Lift the thumb blade until the shear forms roughly a right angle.
Let it go
Release the blade cleanly. Do not push it or slow it down.
Read the result
Correct tension: the blade falls about halfway to two-thirds closed and stops. Falls fully closed: too loose. Barely moves: too tight.
Adjust in small increments
One click, or an eighth of a turn on a screw adjuster. Re-test after every change. Large adjustments overshoot and you lose track of where you started.
Confirm on hair, not in the air
Cut a test section. The setting that passes the drop test should also cut cleanly at the tips — that is the real check.
Tune it to your work
Tension is personal within a range. Stylists who cut a lot of fine hair often prefer marginally tighter than the textbook setting; barbers working through coarse dry hair often prefer marginally looser. The drop test finds the centre of the acceptable range — adjust from there based on how the shear actually cuts.

The daily routine
Forty seconds per day, and it determines whether your shear reaches ten years:
- After each client: wipe both blades with a dry, lint-free cloth, from the pivot toward the tip. Hair, product residue and — in a colour salon — chemistry all attack steel.
- End of day, step one: wipe with a barely damp cloth to lift residue, then dry completely. Damp is not acceptable; dry means dry.
- End of day, step two: one drop of shear oil at the pivot. Open and close the shear a few times to distribute it, then wipe away the excess.
- End of day, step three: store closed, in a case, with the blades not touching anything else.

Storage
The rules are simple and almost universally broken:
- Always closed. An open shear catches on things and the exposed edges are vulnerable.
- Always in a case or pouch, with each shear in its own slot so blades do not contact each other.
- Never loose in a drawer or trolley. The most common source of edge damage in salons.
- Dry environment. A damp station drawer will pit blades over months.
- Oiled if stored for a long period, and checked every few months.
The one habit worth building
The most common preventable damage in every salon is a shear left open on a trolley and knocked onto tile. Get into the habit of closing and casing the shear every single time you put it down, even for thirty seconds.
When it really does need a sharpener

How do I test shear tension?

Brief immersion in an approved disinfectant is standard practice where regulation requires it, but extended soaking will corrode the blades and strip the pivot. Follow local regulation, keep contact time to the minimum specified, then rinse, dry completely and re-oil the pivot.
