It is not a ranking, and it is not an endorsement — the right shear for you is decided by length, edge and handle long before it is decided by badge. Use this to understand what you are looking at, then choose on specification.
Japanese hairdressing makers
Japan dominates the convex, hand-finished end of the market. The concentration of blade-making around Seki City and the domestic supply of clean, consistently milled steel are both genuine structural advantages, and the tradition of hand-honing convex geometry is Japanese in origin.

European makers
German makers — particularly around Solingen, a blade-making centre for centuries — dominate the beveled and micro-serrated end of the market. Their shears tend to be tougher, cheaper to service and better suited to wet blunt work than to slide cutting.

How to read a brand's positioning

Verify current specifications
Model lines get revised, renamed and discontinued regularly, and the same name can mean different things across generations. Always confirm the current specification with the manufacturer or an authorised dealer before buying — including length, edge type, steel and handedness.
Country of origin, honestly
"Japanese steel" and "made in Japan" are different claims, and both are used loosely. A shear can be made from Japanese-milled steel in another country, which is legitimate and often good value — but it is not the same as a shear designed, hardened and hand-finished in Japan.
Similarly, "German steel" usually describes the alloy family rather than the place of manufacture. Neither claim is dishonest; both are frequently read as more than they say. If origin matters to you, look for a maker who states manufacturing location explicitly.
Frequently asked questions
Are Japanese shears really better?
Japanese makers dominate the convex end of the market because that is where the hand-finishing tradition developed, and because Japanese steel mills supply consistently clean alloys. That is a genuine advantage for convex geometry and edge retention. For beveled and micro-serrated shears, German makers are excellent and often cheaper to maintain. "Better" depends entirely on which geometry you need.
Does brand matter more than specification?
No. Length, edge type and handle geometry decide whether a shear suits you; brand mostly predicts consistency of manufacture and availability of service. A well-chosen mid-tier shear from an established maker beats a badly chosen flagship every time.
Why do some brands not publish steel hardness?
Some regard it as proprietary, some because the figure varies within a production run, and some because they buy blanks rather than controlling heat treatment. A maker who publishes hardness and country of steel origin is generally being more transparent — but the absence of a figure is not by itself a red flag on an established brand.
Should I buy from a brand my sharpener has not seen?
It is a real consideration, particularly above about $400. An unfamiliar convex geometry raises the chance of a service that changes the blade rather than restoring it. Ask your sharpener before committing.
Are house-brand shears from distributors any good?
They vary enormously. Some are re-badged production from established factories and are very good value; others are commodity blanks. The tell is whether the specification is complete and specific — steel with origin, hardness, edge type, weight — or vague.
