Scissor over comb
How to build a smooth taper with scissor over comb — comb angle, overlap, working around the occipital bone, and how to diagnose steps, corners and wedges.
Scissor over comb is the foundation of barbering and the technique that separates a smooth taper from a series of visible ledges. It is entirely a rhythm skill: the comb controls the shape, the shear only removes what the comb presents, and everything depends on the two moving together.
The principle
The comb is inserted into the hair and lifted away from the head at a chosen angle. Hair that stands proud of the comb teeth is removed. The angle of the comb relative to the scalp determines how much length is left — flatter comb means shorter, steeper comb means longer.
Everything about the resulting shape is decided by the comb. The shear is a follower. Stylists who struggle with this technique are almost always trying to control shape with the shear.
The rule to internalise
If your blend is wrong, change the comb angle. Stylists who try to fix a blend by changing what the shear does end up cutting wedges into the shape, which then need fixing too.

The technique
Set your guideline at the bottom
Comb held flat or nearly flat against the skin at the lowest point. Remove what stands proud. This establishes the shortest length in the taper.
Insert the comb and lift to your chosen angle
The angle away from the scalp determines what length is left. Choose it deliberately before you start moving.
Keep the shear parallel to the comb spine
Blades travel along the comb, not across it. Any angle between shear and comb cuts a wedge.
Move comb and shear together, as one unit
Both travel up the head at the same rate. Stopping the comb while the shear continues is the classic cause of a step.
Open and close continuously and evenly
Full closures at a steady rhythm. Partial closures leave uncut hair that shows up as fuzz two days later.
Overlap the next pass by about half
Every part of the head should be worked at least twice at slightly different angles. This is what removes steps.
Step back and check dry, from a distance
At least a metre, from several angles, with the hair dry and combed into its natural fall.
Overlap: the mechanism that removes steps
A single pass of the comb removes hair along a band roughly as wide as the comb. If your next pass starts exactly where the previous one ended, any tiny discrepancy in comb angle between passes becomes a visible line at the join.
Overlapping each pass by roughly half its width means every part of the head is worked at least twice, at slightly different angles, which averages out the discrepancies. This is not a refinement — it is the entire mechanism by which the blend becomes smooth.
Working around a round head
A head is not a cylinder. The angle that produces the right result at the back is wrong at the sides, and both are wrong over the ear and at the occipital bone.

The practical habit: move your body around the chair rather than changing your wrist angle to reach. A comb held at a consistent angle relative to the scalp produces a consistent result; a comb held at a consistent angle relative to you produces a mess.

Building the rhythm
Scissor over comb is a motor skill and it responds to deliberate practice more than to explanation:
- Practise the shear action alone. Open and close continuously and evenly, in the air, until it is automatic. The rhythm has to be free before you can concentrate on the comb.
- Then practise the comb travel alone. Comb through a mannequin, lifting at a consistent angle, without cutting.
- Then combine them slowly. Speed comes last and comes on its own.
- Work on a mannequin with dark hair. Steps and unevenness are far more visible than on light hair, which makes it a better teacher.
- Check from a distance regularly. Faults invisible at arm's length are obvious from two metres.
Frequently asked questions
What length shear is best for scissor over comb?
6.5"–7.0" for most people. A longer blade covers more comb per pass, which means fewer passes, a smoother blend and fewer opportunities to leave a step. Below 6.0" the technique becomes choppy.
Why do I keep leaving steps?
Almost always insufficient overlap between passes, or stopping the comb while the shear keeps moving. Each pass should cover about half the ground of the previous one, and the comb and shear should travel as a single unit.
Should the comb be flat against the head?
Only at the very bottom of a taper, where you want to remove almost everything. As you work upward you progressively increase the comb angle away from the head, and that angle is what creates the graduation.
Can I do scissor over comb on wet hair?
You can, but dry is standard and more accurate. Wet hair lies flatter and does not stand up through the comb teeth consistently, so what you remove does not match what you see. Most barbers work dry or barely damp.
What is the difference between scissor over comb and clipper over comb?
The tool and the finish. Clipper over comb is faster and gives a more uniform, mechanical result. Scissor over comb is slower, gives a softer and less regimented finish, and allows far more control over the transition. Many barbers use clippers for bulk and shears for the blend.
