How elevation builds every layered shape, the difference between graduation and layering, how over-direction creates progressive length, and how to avoid holes.

Layering and graduation are the same mechanism — elevation — used at different angles to produce opposite results. Understand elevation properly and both become predictable rather than a matter of copying diagrams.

The mechanism: elevation

When you lift a section away from the head and cut across it in a straight line, the hair nearest the scalp travels a shorter distance to the blade than the hair furthest from it. The result is that the section is cut at different lengths along its own depth.

The greater the elevation, the greater that difference. That is all elevation does — but it is enough to produce every layered shape.

Graduation: stacking weight

Below 90 degrees, the hair nearest the scalp ends up shorter than the hair further out. When that section falls back to the head, the shorter interior hair sits underneath and supports the longer exterior hair, which stacks against it. The result is a build-up of weight — a wedge — with a defined weight line where it accumulates.

Graduation is how you get structure. Graduated bobs, stacked backs, the weight corner in a classic short shape, and the density in men's cutting all come from low elevation.

Layering: removing weight

At 90 degrees and above, the interior hair becomes longer relative to the exterior, so weight is distributed away from the perimeter rather than accumulating there. The shape becomes rounder, lighter and more mobile.

Uniform layering — every section at 90 degrees to the head — produces a shape that follows the head's own curve. Increase layering — over-directing sections toward a stationary guide — produces shapes that get progressively longer toward the perimeter.

Over-direction

Over-direction means pulling a section away from its natural fall before cutting it, usually toward a fixed guideline elsewhere on the head.

The effect is progressive: the further a section has to travel to reach the guide, the more length it retains when it returns to its natural position. That is how you create face-framing length that increases smoothly, or a back that gets longer as it moves outward, without cutting each section to a different measurement.

The working method

  1. Establish the perimeter first

    Layering is built on top of a finished perimeter. Cutting layers before the outline means the layers have nothing to relate to.

  2. Section the head cleanly and deliberately

    Clean partings are not cosmetic. Ragged sections produce holes and steps that are difficult to correct.

  3. Set your first guide and be clear what type it is

    Decide whether the guide travels or stays stationary before you start. Changing your mind mid-head is the most common cause of an uneven result.

  4. Keep a visible portion of the previous section in every new one

    This is what keeps you accurate. Cutting to a guide you cannot see is guessing.

  5. Maintain consistent elevation and tension

    Elevation drifting by 15 degrees across a head produces a shape nobody asked for. Check yourself against the head's curve rather than against your own arm.

  6. Cross-check in the opposite direction

    If you sectioned vertically, check horizontally. Cross-checking reveals unevenness that is invisible in the direction you cut.

  7. Dry, then refine

    Assess where weight actually sits once the hair is dry and in its natural fall, then refine with point cutting or slide cutting.

Why holes happen

Holes are almost never a cutting error — they are a sectioning error. If you can always see part of your previous section, you cannot produce a hole. If you cannot, you are guessing, and eventually you will guess wrong.

Refining dry

Wet layering establishes the structure. Dry refinement is where the shape becomes a haircut. Working dry, you can see where weight has actually collected, where a section is fighting its natural fall, and how the hair moves.

What is the difference between layering and graduation?
