Building a professional shear kit
What to buy first, second and third when assembling a shear kit — with a five-year plan, realistic budgets, and why a blender beats a second straight shear.
Most stylists assemble a kit by accident: a shear bought in college, something from a trade show, a blender that came in a set. The result is usually three tools that overlap and two gaps nobody has noticed. Building deliberately costs less and works better.
The principle: buy capability, not quantity
Every addition to your kit should let you do something you currently cannot do, or do something you do often noticeably better. A second straight shear of a similar length to your first does neither. A blender does. A 6.5" over-comb shear does. That is the entire test.

When to reorder this
The one order change worth making: if you have any hand or wrist symptoms, bring an ergonomic upgrade forward to stage two, ahead of the blender. A crane or swivel primary matters more than any capability you are missing.
Stage one: the primary shear
This is the tool you will use for most of every day, and it deserves most of your budget. The specification for the great majority of salon stylists:
- Length: 5.5" (or 6.0" for larger hands)
- Edge: convex
- Handle: offset
- Steel: Japanese 440C or better
- Tension: click or dial adjuster, not a flat screw
- Budget: $150–$400

Stage two: the blender
The highest-value second purchase, without close competition. A 30–35 tooth blender at 5.5"–6.0" transforms what you can do with weight and movement, and costs less than a second straight shear.
Buy from a maker who also makes decent straight shears. The notched blade still carries a cutting edge, and cheap blenders crush hair rather than cut it — which shows up as damaged ends weeks later. See thinning vs. texturising.
Stage three: length coverage
Now you fill the gap at the other end of your range. What that means depends on your work:
- Doing over-comb and long, heavy hair? Add 6.5".
- Doing short, precise work, fringes, detail? Add 5.0".
- Doing both? Add whichever you reach for more often, and add the other in six months.
This shear does not need to match your primary in quality. It is doing a narrower job, and a solid $150–$250 tool is entirely adequate.

The things that are not shears
Kit-building conversations skip these, and they matter:
- A proper case. Shears stored loose get dropped, knocked and nicked. A case is the cheapest edge insurance available.
- Shear oil. Not sewing machine oil, not clipper oil, not WD-40. Shear oil, applied at the pivot daily.
- A microfibre or chamois cloth that lives with the shears and is used after every client.
- A relationship with a sharpener who can service convex geometry. Find them before you need them.
- A backup shear if you cut full time.
Grooming kits build differently

Frequently asked questions
How many shears does a working stylist actually need?
Three to four covers almost every column: a primary straight, a blender, a longer shear for over-comb and heavy panels, and a short detail shear. Some senior stylists run six or more because they have specialised, and some excellent ones work with two. More shears do not make a better haircut; the right shear for the technique you are doing does.
Should I buy a matched set?
Usually not. Sets pair a straight shear with a blender chosen by the manufacturer, not by you, and the blender is frequently the weaker half. Buying each tool on its own merits costs slightly more and produces a noticeably better kit.
What should a student buy on day one?
One 5.5" convex offset shear in the $110–$180 band, a case, and shear oil. That is it. Add a blender once you can consistently produce a clean line — blending before your baseline cutting is reliable just hides problems you should be learning to fix.
When should I replace a shear rather than sharpen it?
When sharpening no longer restores it. The practical signs are: the blade has visibly narrowed from repeated grinding, the ride line has been ground away and tension will not hold, or the pivot has developed lateral play that adjustment cannot remove. A good shear typically survives 15–25 services before that point.
Do I need a backup shear?
If you cut full time, yes. Not a second flagship — a competent $120 shear that lives in your bag for the week your primary is at the sharpener. The alternative is either cutting with something unsuitable or losing income.
