Thinning vs. texturising shears

Tooth count, gap profile and removal rates explained — how 46-tooth blenders, 30-tooth thinners and wide-tooth chunkers differ, and where to place the cut.

Notched shears are the most misused tool in the kit. They are bought as a single generic "thinning shear", used at the wrong distance from the root, and blamed for results that were caused by placement. Understood properly they are the fastest way to remove weight without removing length, and the difference between a haircut that sits and one that fights.

One family, two ends of a scale

Every notched shear has one solid blade and one toothed blade. The toothed blade holds some hair while the solid blade cuts the rest. The only meaningful variables are how many teeth there are, how wide the gaps are, and what shape the teeth have.

Naming is inconsistent across the industry. "Blender", "thinner", "texturiser" and "chunker" mean different things to different manufacturers. Ignore the label on the box and read the tooth count.

Published removal figures differ between manufacturers because tooth width and gap profile matter as much as count. Use this as a relative scale.

The rule everyone gets wrong

Counter-intuitive but important: more teeth means less hair removed. The teeth hold hair away from the cutting blade, so a densely toothed shear protects more of the section than a widely spaced one. Buyers routinely get this backwards.

Tooth profile

Count alone does not tell the whole story. Profile changes the character of the cut:

  • V-notch / standard teeth. The most common. Cuts a soft, graduated edge on each strand. Forgiving and hard to see.
  • Flat-top teeth. Give a cleaner, more defined removal. Slightly more visible.
  • T-shaped / chunker teeth. Wide gaps with broad flat teeth. Removes large sections cleanly and creates deliberate separation.
  • Variable or irregular spacing. Some makers vary the gap along the blade so the removal pattern is not regular, which reduces visible lines in fine hair.
  • Double-sided (teeth on both blades). Removes far less per closure and blends very softly. Excellent for fine hair and for stylists who are nervous with notched shears.

The mistake to avoid

The single most common blending error is working too close to the root. The short pieces you create stand up as they grow out, and the client returns in six weeks with frizz they did not have before. Unless you are deliberately removing base weight, stay in the lower half of the section.

Technique that works

  1. Work on dry, or nearly dry, hair

    Wet hair clumps and the teeth engage more than you intend. You will not see the true result until it dries, by which point the hair is gone.

  2. Take a clean section and hold it with even tension

    Uneven tension means uneven removal. Do not over-stretch — the section should be held, not pulled.

  3. Close once, then move

    The most common mistake is closing repeatedly in the same place. One closure per position, then reposition. Repeated closures in one spot are how you create a hole.

  4. Comb through between passes

    Combing releases the cut pieces so you can see the actual result rather than the result plus debris. Assess after combing, not before.

  5. Stop earlier than feels finished

    Removed weight cannot be replaced. Blending is a technique where under-doing it is recoverable in the next thirty seconds and over-doing it is recoverable in three months.

Choosing your first blender

If you are buying one notched shear, buy a 30–35 tooth blender at 5.5"–6.0". It is forgiving enough to be hard to damage a haircut with, and aggressive enough to make a visible difference in one or two passes. Buy convex or semi-convex teeth from a maker who also makes decent straight shears — the notched blade still has a cutting edge, and cheap ones crush hair.

Add a low-count texturiser (14–20 teeth) only when you have a specific, repeated need for strong visible separation. Add a double-sided blender if you work with a lot of fine hair.

Pet grooming: the same scale, different vocabulary

Groomers use the same physics with different names. Blenders (fewer teeth, one notched blade) finish and tidy without leaving lines. Thinners (higher counts, 30–46) remove bulk gradually. Chunkers with wide T-teeth break up a solid coat line quickly. Maintenance

Notched shears need the same daily wipe and pivot oil as straight shears, plus one extra consideration: hair packs into the tooth gaps and is easy to miss. Wipe along the teeth, not across them.

Sharpening is a specialist job. Each tooth has to be addressed individually and the solid blade re-edged to match, which is why blender sharpening costs more than straight-shear sharpening and why a lot of shops decline it. Expect a longer interval than a straight shear — notched blades do less total cutting — but budget more per service.
