Barber shears and cutting fades

Why barbers run 6.5"–7.0" shears, when semi-convex beats full convex, how to build a scissor fade with comb elevation, and what barbering load does to maintenance intervals.

Barbering asks different things of a shear than salon work does. The hair is generally shorter, drier and coarser; the dominant technique is scissor-over-comb rather than sectioned panel cutting; and the volume of closures per day is higher. Those differences push the specification in a consistent direction.

Length: why barbers run long

Scissor-over-comb is a rhythm technique. The comb feeds hair at a controlled elevation and the shear travels up the comb removing what stands proud. A longer blade covers more comb per pass, which means fewer passes, a smoother blend and less chance of leaving a step where two passes meet.

6.5" is the sweet spot for most barbers. 7.0" and above suits large hands and high-volume shops where speed matters; below 6.0" the technique becomes choppy and you spend the day fighting for a smooth result. Detail in the shear size guide.

Caveat

Length only helps if your hand can control it. A 7.0" shear in a hand that fits a 6.0" will produce worse blends, not better ones, because you will be steering from the wrist. Do the palm-crease fit test before you size up.

Edge: semi-convex is the quiet default

Barbering is hard on edges. Dry hair is more abrasive than wet, coarse hair more than fine, and over-comb work brings the blade into repeated contact with a comb. A full convex edge will do the job beautifully and will need servicing more often; a semi-convex edge gives up a little glide in exchange for meaningfully better durability and cheaper maintenance.

Where a full convex earns its place in a barber's kit is dry detail work on top — point cutting, freehand texturising, softening a hard line. Many barbers run semi-convex 6.5" for over-comb and a convex 5.5" for detail, which is a sensible two-shear kit.

Scissor-over-comb, done properly

  1. Set the comb angle, not the shear angle

    The comb controls elevation and therefore the shape. The shear only removes what the comb presents. If the blend is wrong, change the comb.

  2. Keep the shear parallel to the comb

    Any deviation cuts a wedge instead of a line. The blade should travel along the comb spine, not across it.

  3. Move the comb and the shear together

    Both travel up the head as one unit. Stopping the comb while the shear continues is what creates a step.

  4. Overlap every pass

    Each pass should cover about half the ground of the previous one. Overlap is the entire mechanism by which steps disappear.

  5. Open and close continuously, do not chop

    Full closures at a steady rhythm. Partial closures leave uncut hair that shows up as fuzz two days later.

  6. Step back and check dry

    From at least a metre. Steps and corners are invisible from arm's length and obvious from across the room.

Cutting a fade with shears

A scissor fade builds the same graduation a clipper does, using comb elevation instead of guard length. It is slower and softer, and it gives you control over the transition that no guard set can match.

The working sequence most barbers use:

  1. Establish the guideline at the bottom with the comb held flat against the skin, taking off only what stands proud.
  2. Work upward in overlapping bands, raising the comb angle progressively. Each band should overlap the previous one by roughly half its width — that overlap is what removes steps.
  3. Change your angle of attack, not your elevation, when you move around the head. The head is round; the comb has to follow it.
  4. Check with the comb flat and the hair dry, from at least a metre back, before you refine. Corner lines and steps are invisible at close range.
  5. Blend the transition with freehand point cutting or a blender, working vertically into the line rather than across it.

Diagnosing a banded fade

The most common scissor-fade fault is a visible band where two working zones meet. It is almost always caused by changing comb elevation between zones without overlapping the passes. Fix it by re-working the boundary with the comb held at the average of the two angles.

Blenders in barbering

Barbers generally want fewer teeth than salon stylists. A 30–35 tooth blender removes weight efficiently from dense men's hair; 40+ tooth blenders are often too gentle to make a difference in one pass on thick, coarse hair, which tempts you into repeated closures in the same place. Beard and detail work

Beard work has its own requirements: a short blade (5.0"–5.5"), a fine tip you can see, and an edge that cuts cleanly on very coarse, dry hair. Beard hair is among the toughest fibre a shear encounters, and it will find any weakness in an edge.

Many barbers keep a dedicated beard shear rather than using their primary, precisely because beard work dulls an edge faster and they would rather not compromise their over-comb tool.

Maintenance under barbering load

Higher volume, drier hair and comb contact mean barber shears need attention more often:

  • Wipe after every client, not at the end of the day. Dry hair debris packs around the pivot faster than wet hair does.
  • Check tension weekly. High closure counts drift the setting faster.
  • Oil the pivot daily. One drop, open and close a few times, wipe the excess.
  • Expect to sharpen every four to eight months in a full-time chair.

Do I need convex shears for fades?
