Start with the tier, not the brand

Shear pricing is unusually honest — cost is dominated by steel, heat treatment and hand-finishing hours rather than by branding. That makes it possible to say fairly precisely what each band buys.

How to read a recommendation on this site

Every pick here leads with a specification and follows with a model, in that order. That is deliberate, and it is the opposite of how most shear content is written.

The reason is that the specification is the durable part. Model lines get revised, renamed and discontinued; distributors change; a listing that was correct last year may now point at a different generation of the same name. Blade length, edge geometry, handle type and steel grade do not change. If you know you need a 5.5" convex offset in Japanese 440C, you can walk into any dealer and evaluate whatever they put in front of you. If all you have is a model name, you are at the mercy of what happens to be in stock.

So: read the specification first. Treat the named model as a worked example of that specification, not as the only correct answer. Several shears will meet any given spec, and the one that fits your hand best is the right one.

When not to buy anything

A large share of the questions we get about buying a new shear turn out not to be buying questions at all. Before you spend, rule these out:

  • Your shear folds hair. Run the drop test. Loose tension is the single most common cause of a shear that feels blunt, and it costs nothing to fix.
  • It feels gritty or stiff. Clean and oil the pivot. Debris packs in faster than most people expect, particularly with dry cutting.
  • It has genuinely dulled. A professional sharpening restores most of the performance of a good shear for a fraction of replacement cost. Most premium shears have fifteen to twenty-five services in them.
  • Your hand hurts. Check finger insert sizing and grip pressure first. If the problem persists, the answer is handle geometry — not a better alloy, and not a second shear of the same design.
  • You want to work faster. Better sectioning and a proper blender do more for your day than a longer or more expensive straight shear.
