Slide cutting — also called slithering or slicing — removes weight progressively along the length of a section rather than at a single point. It is the technique that produces soft, graduated shapes that look grown-in rather than cut, and it is completely dependent on having the right edge.

What it does

In a conventional cut, the blades close on a stationary section and remove everything at one point. In a slide cut, the blades are held slightly open and drawn along the section while it is under light tension. Individual strands enter the blade gap at different moments and are cut at different lengths, producing a taper rather than a line.

The result is graduation without visible steps, and weight removal that varies continuously along the length. Nothing else produces quite that effect.

Why convex is non-negotiable

A convex blade face is a continuous curve. When hair meets it during a sliding movement, the strand is deflected progressively around the curve and severed as it reaches the edge. Friction is minimal and nothing catches.

A beveled blade presents a shoulder — an abrupt change of angle — at the point where the bevel begins. Hair meeting that shoulder does not deflect smoothly; it stops, bunches, and either escapes or is dragged. Micro-serration makes it worse still, because the teeth are specifically designed to grip hair and stop it sliding.

The technique

  1. Confirm you have a sharp convex shear

    Test on a scrap section first. If it drags at all, do not proceed — sharpen it first.

  2. Work on dry hair

    Wet hair grips the blade dramatically more. Dry is both safer and more predictable.

  3. Take a section and hold it under light, even tension

    Light. Over-tensioning increases the contact force between hair and blade, which is what turns a slide cut into a drag.

  4. Open the blades a small amount

    A few degrees only. This is not a wide-open scissor action — you are creating a controlled gap for hair to pass through.

  5. Draw the shear along the section, moving steadily

    Continuous, smooth, from higher up toward the ends. Speed matters: moving too slowly increases contact time and drag.

  6. Close very slightly as you travel, if you want more removal

    A gradual, partial closing motion during the pass removes more. Full closures during a slide produce a chunk, not a taper.

  7. Release, comb through and assess

    Look at the result before doing another pass. Slide cutting is cumulative and cannot be undone.

Where slide cutting works

  • Long layers — the classic use. Produces graduation with no visible step between layers.
  • Removing weight from mid-lengths without shortening the perimeter.
  • Face framing — a slide-cut face frame falls softly instead of sitting as a defined shelf.
  • Softening a graduated shape that has come out too structured.
  • Blending a correction where two lengths meet awkwardly.
  • Men's longer cuts — softening the sides and blending into the top.

Where it does not

  • Fine hair — removes visual density fast and can leave the ends looking wispy. Short passes only, if at all.
  • Curly hair — sustained blade contact stresses the curl at its weak points.
  • Very short hair — there is not enough length for a taper to develop.
  • Chemically compromised hair — a damaged cuticle abrades under blade contact.
  • Anywhere you need a clean line — this technique is definitionally the opposite of a line.

Building the skill safely

  1. Practise on a mannequin first. Slide cutting is one of the few techniques where the failure mode — removing far more than intended — is immediately visible and completely irreversible.
  2. Start with short passes. 5 cm at a time, assessing between each.
  3. Keep the blade opening small. Wider opening equals more removal per pass.
  4. Work on the underside first where mistakes are less visible.
  5. Stop the moment anything catches. Forcing through a catch damages the hair and the edge.

Frequently asked questions

What shears do I need for slide cutting?

Convex, and genuinely sharp. This is the technique that a convex edge exists for: the curved blade face lets hair deflect and slide past rather than catching. A beveled edge — especially a serrated one — will push and drag, producing an uneven result and damaging the hair.

Should slide cutting be done wet or dry?

Traditionally dry, and dry is safer. Wet hair grips the blade far more, which increases drag and the risk of removing more than you intended. Some stylists slide cut on damp hair with a very sharp shear, but if you are learning, work dry.

Why does my shear catch when I slide cut?

Four likely reasons: the edge is not convex; the edge is dull; the blades are open too wide; or you are moving too slowly. A catching shear is a warning — stop, because forcing it damages both the hair and the edge.

Does slide cutting damage hair?

Done with a sharp convex shear, no more than any other cut. Done with a dull or beveled edge, yes — the blade abrades the cuticle along the length of the strand rather than cutting it cleanly, which produces splitting weeks later.

Can I slide cut curly hair?

With great caution, and many stylists avoid it. Curls are structurally weakest at every bend, and the sustained blade contact of a slide cut stresses exactly those points. If you do it, use a freshly sharpened convex shear, work on dry hair, and keep passes short.
