Shear Finder

Five questions, one written specification: length, edge, handle, steel and a starting point. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere.

Question 1 of 5

Who are you cutting?

Nothing is stored or sent

What the Shear Finder is doing

It is not a database lookup and it is not scoring products. It applies the same decision order a good dealer would use, in the same sequence, and returns a written specification rather than a single product.

The decision order
OrderDecisionDriven by
1Blade lengthWhat you cut and your hand size
2Edge geometryThe techniques you use most often
3Handle geometryWhether you have symptoms, and how you work
4Steel gradeYour budget and your access to sharpening
5Specific modelEverything above, plus availability

Everything happens in your browser. Nothing is stored, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no account or email step.

Why a specification rather than a product

Because the specification is the durable part. Models get discontinued, revised and renamed; lengths, edges, handles and steel grades do not. If you walk into a dealer knowing you need a 5.5" convex offset in Japanese 440C, you can evaluate anything they show you. If you walk in with only a model name, you are at the mercy of whether they stock it.

The five questions, and why each one is asked

Why each question matters
QuestionWhat it decides
Who are you cutting?Length band and edge type. Grooming, barbering and salon work diverge sharply.
Where are you in your career? How many shears the recommendation covers, and which price band is sensible.
Which hand cuts?Whether you need true left-handed blade orientation — a mechanical requirement, not a preference.
What can you spend?Steel grade and finishing level. Also which makers are realistic.
Do you get hand, wrist or shoulder pain?Whether handle geometry should override every other consideration.

What it deliberately does not do

  • It does not rank brands. Fit and specification decide far more than badge.
  • It does not claim a single right answer. Several shears will meet any given specification.
  • It does not weight results by commission. See our affiliate disclosure.
  • It cannot feel the shear for you. Hold it before you commit if you possibly can — fit is the one thing no tool can assess remotely.
