Three things almost everyone gets wrong
- Buying for the alloy name. Heat treatment matters more than the steel stamped on the blade, and handle geometry matters more than both. A well-treated Japanese 440C shear that fits your hand beats a premium alloy that does not.
- Assuming more teeth removes more hair. It is the opposite — a densely toothed blender holds more hair away from the cutting blade. See thinning vs. texturising.
- Sending a shear for sharpening when it needs tensioning. Most shears that seem blunt are simply loose. The drop test takes ten seconds.
Technique decides the tool
Every cutting method makes a specific demand of the shear. Slide cutting needs an edge that glides; blunt cutting rewards one that grips. Choosing a shear without knowing which techniques fill your week is how people end up with tools they never reach for.
