How to hold your shears
The correct shear grip finger by finger, why only the thumb blade should move, grip pressure, palm-to-palm versus palm-down, and the posture faults that end careers early.
Grip is the free upgrade. It costs nothing, it makes an existing shear cut better, and it is the single largest controllable factor in whether you can still cut comfortably in twenty years. It is also, in most training, covered in about ten minutes and never revisited.
The correct hold
Thumb into the moving ring, to the first joint only
The ring sits on the pad of the thumb, not pushed down to the knuckle. This keeps thumb travel short and control precise.
Ring finger into the fixed ring
Not the index or middle finger. The ring finger is the anchor — it holds the shear steady while the thumb does the work.
Little finger on the tang
If your shear has a finger rest, the little finger sits there. It stabilises the shear against rotation and spreads load off the ring finger.
Middle finger against the outside of the finger arm
It braces the shear and adds a second point of control without gripping.
Index finger resting on the shank
Ahead of the finger ring, on the flat of the handle. This is your steering finger — it never goes into a hole.
Relax everything and open the blades
Only the thumb blade should move. If the finger blade moves too, you are pushing with the ring finger.
Changing an established grip
If you have been cutting for years with a different grip, change it gradually. Practise the correct hold in the air and on mannequins first. Switching mid-column on a client is how you produce a bad haircut and then abandon a good habit.
Only one blade moves
This is the principle that separates controlled cutting from approximate cutting. The finger blade stays still — it defines where the cut will land. The thumb blade travels to meet it.
When both blades move, the cutting line shifts during the closure, so the actual cut lands somewhere other than where you aimed. On a perimeter this shows up as a wavering line that you then spend time correcting. On over-comb work it shows up as steps.
Practising this is straightforward: hold the shear in the air and open and close it while watching the finger blade. If it moves, you are pushing with the ring finger. Relax that finger and let the thumb do all the work.
Grip pressure
Most people grip several times harder than necessary, for three reasons: finger rings that are too large, anxiety about dropping the shear, and habit. All three are fixable.
- Fit finger inserts properly. The ring should contact your finger with the hand relaxed. A loose ring forces you to clench to keep the shear oriented.
- Use the tang. The little finger on the finger rest resists rotation, which removes much of the reason to grip hard.
- Check yourself hourly. Notice the pressure, then deliberately relax it. It takes a few weeks to change and it is worth every bit of the attention.
Wrist, elbow and shoulder
Grip is a hand problem; posture is a body problem, and it is where the injuries actually come from.

The habit that fixes most of this: move your feet, not your wrist. When you cannot reach the cutting angle comfortably, walk around the chair. Stylists who move produce better lines and finish their careers with functioning hands.
Palm-to-palm and palm-down
Two working orientations, each with a purpose.
Palm-down — the back of your cutting hand faces up. Natural, intuitive, and it tends to raise the elbow when you are working above chest height. Fine for short periods.
Palm-to-palm — your cutting palm faces the palm holding the section. Keeps the elbow low and the wrist neutral, and gives a clearer view of the cutting line on vertical sections. This is the orientation to default to for extended work, and the reason crane handles exist.
Being able to work either way, on either side of the head, is what lets you keep a neutral wrist all day rather than contorting to reach an angle. It is worth deliberate practice.

Building better habits
- Set the chair before you set the section. Client's head at your chest height means you are not bending or reaching.
- Reset your grip between sections. Grip pressure creeps upward through a cut. Let go and re-take the shear.
- Alternate orientations deliberately. If you have been palm-down for ten minutes, switch.
- Stretch between clients, not at the end of the day. Wrist extension and flexion, thumb abduction, and a shoulder roll. Sixty seconds.
- Check your tension weekly. Fighting an over-tightened shear is a grip problem disguised as a maintenance problem. See tension and maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Which fingers go in a shear?
Thumb in the moving ring, ring finger in the fixed ring. The little finger rests on the tang if there is one, the middle finger sits against the outside of the finger arm, and the index finger rests on the shank ahead of the ring for control. The index finger never goes in a hole.
Should the thumb go all the way through the ring?
No. The ring should sit at or just below the first joint of the thumb — the pad, not the knuckle. Pushing the thumb through to the second joint means you are steering the shear with the whole thumb rather than the tip, which increases travel, reduces control and loads the tendon.
Should both blades move?
No. Only the thumb blade should move. The finger blade stays still and defines the cutting line. Moving both blades means the line moves while you cut, which is the main reason beginners produce uneven perimeters.
How hard should I grip?
Far more lightly than most people do. The shear should be controlled, not clenched. A useful check: if your forearm is tired at the end of the day but your fingers are not sore, you are over-gripping. Correct finger inserts help enormously.
What is palm-to-palm cutting?
Cutting with your palm facing the palm of the hand holding the section, usually with the shear pointing downward or across. It keeps the elbow low and the wrist neutral, which is why it is preferred for long stretches of work — particularly with crane-handled shears.
