Blunt cutting
How to cut a clean blunt line — section thickness, equalising tension, keeping the finger blade still, elevation effects, and how to diagnose a wavering perimeter.
Blunt cutting is the foundation everything else is built on. It is also the technique that exposes every fault in grip, tension, sectioning and posture, which is why experienced stylists can tell a great deal about someone's training from one blunt line.
What makes a blunt line work
Every strand in the section terminates at exactly the same length. The eye reads that as a clean edge, and the hair behaves as a single dense mass. Achieving it requires four things to be simultaneously true: the section is under even tension, the guideline is visible, only one blade moves, and the closure is complete and clean.
Fail any one and the line wavers.

Where beveled wins
This is the one technique where a beveled or micro-serrated shear can outperform a premium convex one. Grip is an advantage when you need hair to stay exactly where you put it, and premium convex shears are specifically designed to let hair slide.
The technique
Section cleanly and comb the whole area flat
A clean section is half the result. Ragged section lines produce ragged cut lines.
Take a fine sub-section — 6–12 mm
You must be able to see your guideline through the section you are cutting. If you cannot, the section is too thick.
Comb the sub-section immediately before cutting
This equalises tension across the width. Do it every single time, not once per area.
Hold at zero elevation with even pressure
The section lies flat against the head. Hold it with the same pressure across the whole width — uneven grip means an uneven line.
Position the shear along the intended line
Blade flat and parallel to the line you want. Check it against your guideline before you close.
Close cleanly, once, with only the thumb blade moving
The finger blade defines the line and must not move. One complete closure, not several partial ones.
Check against the previous section, then move on
Every section is checked against its guideline as you go. Correcting at the end is far harder than not drifting in the first place.
Tension: the fault everyone underestimates
Uneven tension across a section is the most common cause of an uneven blunt line, and it is almost invisible while you are doing it.
Hair held tighter is stretched further, so when you release it, it retracts further — and the cut lands shorter than intended. If one side of your section is held tighter than the other, the line will be uneven no matter how precisely you cut.
Two habits fix it: comb the section immediately before cutting it (combing equalises tension), and hold the section with the same pressure across its whole width rather than gripping harder at one edge.
Diagnosing your own tension
Test yourself: cut a section, then comb it out and look at the underside. If the line curves upward at one end, you were holding that end tighter. It is almost always the hand that is furthest from your body.

Blunt cutting is normally done at zero elevation, because any elevation introduces graduation — which by definition means strands terminate at different lengths. If the brief is a hard line, keep the section flat against the head.

Softening a blunt line
A perfect blunt line is often not the finished result. On thick hair, an uncompromised blunt perimeter can look like a helmet. The standard correction is point cutting into the line — 3–6 mm deep, varying — which softens how it reads without changing where it sits.
The order matters: cut the line perfectly first, then soften it. Trying to cut a soft line directly produces something that is neither.
