Shear glossary

Professional shear terminology explained — ride line, convex edge, HRC, over-direction, chunker, tang, drop test and forty more terms, with links to the full guides.

440C
The highest-carbon member of the 440 stainless family and the most widely used steel in professional shears. Typically hardened to 58–60 HRC. See steel types.
ATS-314
A high-cobalt Japanese alloy hardened to roughly 60–63 HRC. Among the longest edge lives available in production shears, and demanding to sharpen.
Balance
Where the mass of a shear sits relative to the pivot. Blade-heavy shears drop into a cut; handle-heavy shears feel more controllable at the tip.
Beveled edge
A blade with a comparatively flat face that transitions into a steeper angle near the cutting edge. Tougher and cheaper to maintain than convex; cannot slide cut.
Blender
A notched shear with one toothed blade, used to remove weight and soften lines. Typically 24–40 teeth.
Bumper
See silencer.
Chunker
A texturising shear with wide, often T-shaped teeth that removes large amounts of bulk while leaving a deliberately broken line.
Classic handle
A symmetrical handle with both rings opposite one another. Traditional, and the hardest design on the thumb and wrist.
Convex edge
A blade with a continuously curved inner face running to a very fine edge. Required for slide cutting and dry texturising. Also called a Japanese or hamaguri edge.
Crane handle
An exaggerated offset with a raised, straighter finger arm, allowing the hand to sit flat and the elbow to stay low.
Cryogenic treatment
A sub-zero step in heat treatment that converts retained austenite, improving hardness consistency and edge stability.
Damascus
A decorative cladding of folded, contrasting steel layers around a hard core alloy. The core does all the cutting.
Deep point cutting
Point cutting more than about 25 mm into the ends, producing strong texture and significant weight removal. Also called chipping.
Drop test
The standard tension check: from about 90 degrees, a released blade should fall halfway to two-thirds closed and stop.
Elevation
The angle at which a section is held away from the head before cutting. It determines whether a shape graduates or layers.
Ergonomic shear
Any shear whose handle geometry is designed to reduce thumb travel, wrist deviation or elbow elevation — typically offset, crane or swivel designs.
Finger insert
A rubber or silicone ring that sizes down a finger hole. Correct sizing prevents over-gripping.
Finger rest
See tang.
Graduation
Cutting at below 90 degrees of elevation so weight accumulates at a weight line. Produces structure and wedge shapes.
Grey market
Genuine product imported outside official distribution. Usually cuts correctly, but manufacturer warranty and service typically do not apply.
HRC
Rockwell C hardness. Professional shears sit between roughly 55 and 63 HRC. Higher means longer edge life and more difficult sharpening.
Layering
Cutting at 90 degrees of elevation or above, distributing weight away from the perimeter and producing a rounder, more mobile shape.
Left-handed shear (true)
A shear whose blades are ground and assembled in mirror image for the left hand, with the thumb blade at the rear. Not the same as reversed handles.
Micro-serration
A row of very fine teeth along one blade that grips hair so it cannot slide. Excellent for wet blunt cutting; incompatible with slide cutting.
Offset handle
A handle with a shortened, forward-set thumb ring. Reduces thumb travel and lets the elbow drop. The sensible default for most buyers.
Over-direction
Pulling a section away from its natural fall toward a stationary guide before cutting, creating progressive length change.
Pivot
The screw and bearing assembly joining the two blades, and the mechanical heart of the shear.
Point cutting
Cutting into the ends of a section with the blade nearly parallel to the hair, softening a line without changing where it sits.
Ride line
The polished contact band behind the cutting edge where the blades bear against each other. Damage here means a shear that will not hold tension.
Scissor over comb
A barbering technique in which the comb controls elevation and the shear removes whatever stands proud of the comb teeth.
Semi-convex edge
A partially curved blade face with a modest final bevel. A hybrid that glides better than a bevel and lasts longer than a full convex.
Shrinkage
The difference between hair's stretched wet length and its resting dry length. Can exceed 50% on tightly curled hair.
Silencer
A small polymer pad between the handles that cushions full closure and prevents the blades clacking. A cheap consumable that should be replaced when it perishes.
Slide cutting
Drawing slightly open blades along a tensioned section to remove weight progressively. Requires a convex edge. Also called slithering or slicing.
Swivel thumb
A rotating thumb ring that follows the thumb rather than forcing it, keeping the wrist neutral across a wide range of cutting angles.
Tang
The hook below the finger ring that supports the little finger. Usually removable. Also called a finger rest.
Tension
The pressure holding the two blades in contact at the ride line. Too loose and hair folds; too tight and the shear fights you and wears prematurely.
Texturising shear
A notched shear with relatively few, widely spaced teeth (roughly 7–24) that removes large amounts and creates visible separation.
Thinning shear
A notched shear with a high tooth count (roughly 30–46) that removes weight gradually and subtly.
Travelling guide
A guideline that moves with you — each section cut becomes the guide for the next. Produces consistent length across an area.
VG-10
A Japanese cutlery steel with cobalt and vanadium additions, hardened to about 59–61 HRC. Takes and holds a very fine convex edge.
Weight line
The point in a graduated shape where length accumulates and the hair stacks against itself.

The terms most often used loosely

  • Convex. Applied on listings to shears that clearly carry a ground bevel. Use the light test in our edge guide rather than trusting the description.
  • Japanese steel. Describes where the alloy was milled, not where the shear was made or hardened. Both claims are legitimate; they are not the same claim.
  • Left-handed. Frequently used for reversed handles on right-handed blades. See how to tell the difference.
  • Thinning shear. Used for everything from a 46-tooth blender to a 12-tooth chunker. Read the tooth count, not the label.
  • Damascus. Describes the cladding, not the cutting steel. Ask what the core is.
  • Ergonomic. Meaningful when it describes specific geometry — offset, crane, swivel — and meaningless as a standalone adjective.
